In memoriam Max Sparreboom

On 30 August 2016, Max Sparreboom, former director of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation, passed away at the age of 65.

Max Sparreboom worked for our Foundation from 1999 to 2015. After retiring in January 2016, he looked forward to travelling with his girlfriend Marianne and dedicating himself to his many interests, particularly in the area of biology and natural sciences. Unfortunately, he had little time to enjoy his retirement.

In the 16 years that he devoted to the Erasmus Prize, he led the foundation with tremendous care. With unbridled curiosity and tireless commitment, he spotlighted the prize winners and their work every year. He looked after them personally and organized a range of events on their behalf. Moreover, he put himself entirely at the service of the laureates and their fields of expertise, no matter how diverse they were. For him, content and quality were always paramount.

The foundation is deeply grateful and indebted to him, and pays tribute to him with great respect and appreciation.

On behalf of the board and the office of the Foundation:
Martijn Sanders, chairman
