The subject of the book is the practice in the psychiatric clinic Maria Gugging: the problematic and moral questions that arise when psychiatric patients become artists; the emergence and growth of the trade in their art and the role of the doctors in attendance, the collectioneurs and the inhabitants of the ‘Haus der Kunstler’ themselves.
